IM Lim tells us of his struggle to becoming an International Master. It was truly an eye opener and an inspiring story.

10am - 12.30pm Simul with IM Lim Yee Weng. IM Yee Weng will play with 10 of Perak’s stongest players.

2pm Talk by IM Yee Weng, “My Journey to Becoming an IM”. This will be followed by a short Q&A on the topic.

3pm Bring Yee Weng your chess problems. Feel stuck? Wish you had an IM to ask some critical questions? Ask Yee Weng.

4pm Close and balik kampong.

IM Lim Yee Weng

International Master Lim Yee Weng (“IM Lim”) broke into the Malaysian National Men’s team at the age of 13 and subsequently went on to become one of the youngest ever Malaysian National Champion at the age of 14.

IM Lim has represented Malaysia in three (3) World Championships, four (4) World Chess Olympiad and two (2) Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
Some of IM Lim’s notable achievements in the international front includes:
winning the Gold medal at the Asian Cities Team Championship in Singapore in 1995; and propelling the Malaysian National team to their best ever 3rd placed finish at the Asian Cities Team Championship in Malaysia in 1998 and their best ever 4th placed finish at the Asian Indoor Games in Macau in 2007.

As an individual that has achieved great heights in his chess career from a very young age, IM Lim recognizes and understands the pre-requisites that are essential for a junior to becoming a successful chess player and with his vast knowledge and experience, IM Lim has successfully coached various juniors that subsequently went on to become Malaysian Junior Champions in their respective age groups. By training, IM Lim is a legal practitioner.

The First GM Chess Academy's philosophy is aimed at developing a positive and nurturing environment where our children are trained to sharpen their mental skills by asking the right questions and to critically apply analytical methodologies to the challenges before them and to maintain a high level of thinking under increasing pressure. Ergo we focus on teaching how to think as opposed to what to think. And we use chess in the spirit of healthy competition as the medium of instruction.

We aim to prepare young Malaysians, irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affinity, to face a globalised world through chess training by developing a winning mindset.

The First GM chess Academy, is a group of private and corporate citizens who envision a Malaysia with it's first Chess Grand Master. We also see a Malaysia which is able to compete with each other in healthy competition to help bring out the excellence in all of us and yet be able to work in partnership in the face of outside competition.

Our definition of healthy competition is finding ways and means to improve our own individual and collective skills in order to win and NOT by undermining the competition.

The basis of our partnerships is integrity, dignity, responsibility, accountablity and transparency. And our alliances are based on those shared values.

We see chess as a good medium to promote these same values for chess already has, in the main, been a mental sport played in the spirit of muhibbah in Malaysia and chess has demonstrated equal excellence in all our diverse communities.
